Coaxing Summer onto Cloth

1 Sunday a month in July-Oct // $210

Class Description

Join our four-session workshop, "Coaxing Summer onto Cloth," where a cohort of textile enthusiasts and textile curious folks will explore various methods of capturing the beauty of summer and early fall on fabric. Throughout the workshop, you'll learn how to create stunning prints of flora, culminating in the creation of a unique quilt or wall hanging featuring prints from throughout the season. We'll visit a local farm, make a mini flower press, capture plant silhouettes using the sun, coax the color from plants by pounding and steaming, and combine all the results into a beautiful piece of textile art that captures the essence of this joyful season in New England. In July (Sunday July 21st, 1-4pm), we'll visit a local farm and learn about some of the flowers that can be used as dye plants. We'll also build a flower press and use flower pounding techniques to preserve July's blooms. In August (Sunday August 18th 1-4pm) we'll use those pressed flowers and play with paper cutouts and written word to create cyanotypes (sun prints) that marry organic and geometric forms. In September (Sunday September 15th, 1-4pm), we'll harvest late summer blooms and combine them with pressed petals to create beautiful, dappled eco-prints. We'll also use fresh dyestuffs to prepare supplementary fabric. In October (Sunday October 20th 1-4pm) , as the air gets chillier, we'll gather to assemble our captured blooms into wall hangings and quilts, learning quilting basics and hand stitching techniques for embellishment. Throughout the four sessions, we will weave in threads of discussion around sustainability, mindful harvesting, and connecting to sense of place. Each participant will leave with their own hand made artwork that will serve as a snapshot of our time together with the plants and each other. If you are unable to attend all sessions, please reach out as we may be able to offer you a prorated fee. We are reserving spaces for folks who can attend all sessions, but may be able to offer single sessions if there are spots available closer to the workshop start date. No experience necessary. Workshop price includes all materials (pre-treated fabric for dyeing and cyanotypes, flower press materials, fresh blooms) and scholarships are available (please contact us via email for more info!)
